Brief Update

🚒Don’t Fret - It’s a Controlled Fire🧑🏻‍🚒

The Bakersfield Fire Department will conduct a controlled burn for fire prevention and training on May 28–29 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. near 1119 Watts Drive. Residents are advised not to call 911, as this is a planned operation and not an emergency.

🚲Grand Jury Questions Bakersfield Bike Lane Impact

The Kern County Grand Jury criticized Bakersfield’s $200,000 federal grant for bike lanes, calling pollution reduction from biking “nebulous” due to minimal CO₂ impact. They highlighted Bakersfield’s extreme weather and poor air quality as barriers to bike use. However, bike lanes improve safety by reducing accidents and slowing traffic. For residents, this means safer streets but limited pollution benefits. The jury recommended more thorough planning, traffic studies, and unbiased proposals before expanding bike lanes.
